CFP: ALA Editions book on Tablet Computers in School Libraries and Classrooms.
Project description:
The
use of tablet computers such as the iPad, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola
Xoom, as well as reader tablets such as the Kindle Fire and Nook Reader
Tablet have become a very important topic in the field of school
librarianship. At conferences such as ALA and AASL, discussions about
the use of these devices in school libraries, classrooms, and
instruction has reached a significant level. Webinars offered through
these same professional groups garner high attendance and participants
demonstrate a strong desire to learn how to use these tools to enhance
student learning, professional development, and service. Social media
tools, like Twitter, have released an outpouring of conversations as
well on how tablets can be used in the library and classroom. There are
many amazing tablet projects occurring in the field of school
librarianship and they need to be shared with a larger audience. This
has already begun in library based periodicals like Library Media
Connection and Knowledge Quest. An edited book on practical strategies,
ideas, applications, and lesson plans would further meet that need. This
project will result in such an edited book of contributed chapters and
lesson plans.
We
intend to accept 8 chapters and 8 lesson plans focused on the various
uses and practices of tablets and iPads in school libraries and
classrooms. Chapters might include topics focused on instruction,
collaboration, professional development, use of tablets within or
outside of the school building, training, how librarians are learning
about this technology, and more. Lesson plans should be activein
learning, user friendly, and allow for multiple grade level integration.
A lesson plan template will be provided upon lesson plan acceptance.
In
order to submit a proposal please send a one to two paragraph proposal
summary of your chapter or lesson plan idea. Please send a current
resume highlighting any publishing experience that you may have
(publication experience holds no bearing on whether your chapter will be
accepted). All proposals and resumes need to be submitted by September
15, 2012. We will notify authors of the editors' decision by November
1, 2012. Send proposals to tabletsinschoollibs@gmail.com. Identify in email subject heading whether submission is for a chapter or lesson plan proposal.
Anticipated timeline:
September 15, 2012: Chapter and lesson plan proposals due
November 1, 2012: Authors notified of decisions
February 1, 2013: Full chapters due to editors
Feb/March 2013: Editors review chapters and recommend revisions
March 15, 2013: Comments and recommended revisions sent to contributing authors by this date
April 15, 2013: Revised chapters due back to editors
May 2013: Editors continue to work on chapter revisions, communicating with authors on their contributed chapters
June 2013: Final chapter manuscripts are due back to editors for assembling and double checking style and content
June 15, 2013: Editors submit final manuscript to ALA Editions for publication scheduled in 2014
